A pivotal player on three championship teams, Carley Work was a forward/midfielder at California from 2009-12. She became the first standout in program history to be selected a United Soccer Coaches First-Team All-American following a dominating junior campaign. Work received All-PSAC laurels in each of her four years and ranks among the top 10 all-time in school history with 31 goals and 80 points.
As a freshman, Work helped the Vulcans earn their first-ever post-season appearances while finishing the year with a 19-6-1 overall record. Cal placed first in the PSAC West standings and advanced to the semifinals of the league tournament. Work earned All-PSAC West Second-Team honors after totaling 17 points on six goals and five assists despite missing the last five games due to injury. The Vulcans finished the season ranked No. 9 in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll following an appearance in the national quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. The PSAC shifted to a single-division format in 2010 and the Vulcans advanced to the finals of the PSAC Tournament for the first time in program history. Work ranked third on the team with 16 points on six goals and four assists while starting only eight games. In 2011, she tied single-season school records with 19 goals and 44 points to rank among the top five in NCAA Division II in both categories. Work was a consensus First-Team All-American as a junior and was selected both the PSAC Athlete of the Year and D2CCA Region Player of the Year. Cal established the school record for wins with a 20-1-2 overall record behind a 12-0-2 mark in conference play. The Vulcans, which opened play at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility that fall, captured their first PSAC Championship with a 2-1 win in the finals. Work was voted the PSAC Tournament MVP after collecting eight points in three tournament victories. Cal then claimed its second regional title in three years before suffering its only loss of the season in the national quarterfinals at the eventual-National Champions. The Vulcans were ranked No. 6 in the final United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll after out-scoring their opponents by a 74-10 margin in 2010. Cal underwent a coaching change that winter and Work suffered an injury during spring camp. She returned to the field and played the final seven games of the 2011 campaign, collecting a trio of assists. Aided by her leadership, the Vulcans advanced to the finals of the PSAC Tournament for a third-consecutive year before finishing the season with a 16-5-1 overall record.
Work earned her bachelor's degree in sport management in 2013. She is the sixth women’s soccer player selected to the Athletic Hall of Fame, and the third in the last five years.
