Bernie Kalocay

A standout pitcher in the 1960s, Bernie Kalocay was originally from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, and graduated from McKeesport High School.  He was a two-year captain for the Vulcans while playing under head coach Mitch Bailey.



Kalocay was member of the pitching staff that featured future MLB veteran and longtime pitching coach Bruce Dal Canton, who was a charter member of the Cal U Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995. Kalocay helped the Vulcans advance to the NAIA National Tournament in Saint Joseph, Missouri, in both in 1962 and 1963. He finished with a 5-1 record and tallied 40 strikeouts in 1962. Kalocay earned the team’s lone victory in the NAIA Tournament his freshman year. As a sophomore, Kalocay posted a 4-0 record with a 1.29 ERA with 69 strikeouts in 49.1 innings pitched. Kalocay finished with an 18-6 career record, winning at least four games each season.

Kalocay served as a teacher and principal in the South Allegheny School District for over 35 years. He was involved in coaching baseball and basketball, as well as officiating high school basketball.

Kalocay passed away on July 29, 2020.
