One of the most prolific and accomplished pitchers in school history, Alex Sagl was an ace in the circle at California from 2013-16. A three-time NFCA All-American, she helped lead the Vulcans to back-to-back PSAC Championships and an appearance at the NCAA National Championships in 2015. Sagl became only the second pitcher in league history to be selected the PSAC Pitcher of the Year in four-consecutive seasons. The Ontario native finished her career ranked second in school history with 90 wins, 680.0 innings pitched and 809 strikeouts.



As a freshman, Sagl became the program’s first 20-game winner in more than a dozen years. She ranked among league’s top three with 20 wins, 1.55 ERA and 187 strikeouts during the 2013 campaign. The Vulcans won three elimination games in the PSAC Tournament before falling in the PSAC Championship in extra innings. The following year, Cal captured its first league title since 2000 after winning three elimination games on the final day of the PSAC Tournament. Sagl excelled in the tournament, posting a 4-1 record and a 0.93 ERA with 25 strikeouts in 22.1 innings pitched. She repeated as PSAC West Pitcher of the Year and was named a NFCA Third-Team All-American for the first time in her career. Sagl finished the year with a 25-4 record and a 1.49 ERA with 190 strikeouts over 164.0 innings pitched, leading the league in wins and ranking second in ERA and strikeouts. As a junior, Sagl helped the Vulcans repeat as PSAC Champions and advance to the NCAA National Championships for the first time since 1999. Sagl established career highs with 29 wins, 225.2 innings pitched, 279 strikeouts, 27 complete games, 10 complete game and 44 appearances – all ranking third in single-season school history. Cal won five-consecutive elimination games in the PSAC Tournament to capture its eighth league championship. Sagl was named the PSAC Tournament MVP after posting a 5-0 record with one save and a 0.38 ERA with 46 strikeouts over 36.2 innings pitched. She was voted the Daktronics Atlantic Region Pitcher of the Year while repeating as an NFCA Third-Team All-American. In the 2015 NCAA Tournament, the Vulcans won five elimination games with two at the NCAA National Championships. Sagl posted an 8-1 record with 57 strikeouts across the three rounds of the NCAA Tournament. In 2016, Cal made a fourth-straight appearance in the PSAC Championship while Sagl was an NFCA Third-Team All-America for a third-consecutive year. She finished the year with a 16-4 record and ranked second in the league with 153 strikeouts over 132.2 innings pitched.

Sagl earned her bachelor’s degree in criminal justice with a concentration in criminology and a minor in psychology in 2016. She becomes the fifth softball pitcher in school history selected to the Athletic Hall of Fame and second in the last three years.
