CALIFORNIA (Sept. 4) – The California University of Pennsylvania women's cross country team captured the invitational title in its season-opener with three top-10 finishers at the 39th-annual Marty Uher-Cal U Invitational on Saturday.
The Vulcans won the invitational with a team score of 35 points, while NCAA Division III Saint Vincent (47) edged Gannon (59) for second place. Bearcat junior Ivette Mejia claimed the individual crown by over 30 seconds with a time of 19 minutes, 29 seconds.
Freshman
Julia Kubica (Freedom, Pa./Freedom) finished with a team-best time of 20:01 to place second overall in her college debut. Junior
Brittney Kanach (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) crossed the finish line fourth overall with a time of 20:42, only eight seconds ahead of sophomore transfer
Marie McIntyre (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills), who finished sixth overall.
Redshirt freshman
Brittany Amori (Plum, Pa./Plum) and freshman
Melanie Barr (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) rounded out the scorers for the Vulcans after finishing with back-to-back finishes at 11th and 12th overall, respectively. Amori crossed the finish line with a time of 21:10, while Barr was close behind at 21:18.
Sophomore
Carly Youngeberg (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) placed 15th overall at 21:34, while freshman
Liz Larson (Ontario, N.Y./Wayne Central) ran a time of 21:43 to finish 16th overall in her college debut.
Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 11, when it travels to State College, Pa., for the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational.
