SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (May 4) – For the first time in school history, the California University of Pennsylvania women's golf team advanced to the NCAA Division II National Championships following their third-place finish at the NCAA Super Regional One Championship on Tuesday afternoon.
The Vulcans carded a 25-over 313 on the final day to conclude the three-round event with a combined score of 62-over 926 (308-305-313) and third in the team standings. Grand Valley State led the tournament in each of the three rounds and finished with a score of 42-over 906 (304-301-301), while Indianapolis surpassed Cal U for second place in the third round after carded a three-day total of 55-over 919 (309-307-303).
Grand Valley, Indianapolis and Cal U along with the top three individual not with a team will now play in the NCAA National Championships at the
Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz., from May 12-15. Last season, Nova Southeastern (Fla.) won its first-ever national crown after winning the event by 15 strokes. Cal U was also represented at the 2009 NCAA National Championships, as three-time All-American
Simone DeSouza and
Dianne Luke (Mirisarawak, Malaysia/Saint Columba) both competed at the event as individuals.
Freshman
Maria Lopez (Bogota, Colombia/English School) shot a three-over 75 (40-35) on Tuesday to finish the event third overall with a nine-over 225 (73-77-75). After opening her third round with a double bogey and bogey, she regrouped and made the turn at four-over 40. Lopez closed the tournament by shooting a one-under on the back nine, following a birdie on the par-five 18th.
After shooting a 10-over on Sunday, junior
Jenna Rothermel (Danville, Pa./Danville) finished the NCAA Super Regional One Championship with a 15-over 231 (82-73-76) and 12th overall on the leaderboard. She opened the final round with a bogey before shooting par on the next 10 holes. Following a double bogey on the par-four 12th, she answered with a birdie on the 13th and finished the back nine at three-over 39.
Freshman
Karina Palmberg (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Objetivo) entered the final round tied for ninth overall before finishing the event 19th overall at 19-over 235 (78-76-81). She opened Tuesday by shooting seven-over 43 on the front nine and then carded a two-over 38 after the turn with a birdie on the par-four 13th.
Luke finished the tournament in a four-way tie for 20th on the leaderboard at 21-over 237 (75-79-83). After totaling six birdies in the first two rounds, she was unable to erase three double bogeys and five bogeys in the third and final round. Freshman
Lorena Aranda (Trujillo, Peru/San Jose Obrero Marianistats) continued to improve her score throughout the three-day event, finishing with a 44-over 260 (94-85-81). She posted her best round of the regional on Tuesday, shooting a six-over 81 (39-42) with only one double bogey after having six in the first two rounds.
Sophomore Katrina Choate of host Drury captured medalist honors by two strokes and qualified for the NCAA National Championships after shooting a three-round score of six-over 222 (78-71-73).
