Vulcans move into eighth place

MESA, Ariz. (May 14) – Behind a five-over 76 (39-37) by sophomore Dianne Luke (Mirisarawak, Malaysia/Saint Columba) on Friday, the Vulcans finished with a 36-over 320 to move into a tie for eighth place in the team standings at the NCAA Division II National Championships.

Through three rounds at the event, the California University of Pennsylvania women's golf team has shot a 106-over 958 (317-321-320) to tie Indianapolis (317-316-325) for eighth place at the 12-team event. Defending-National Champion Nova Southeastern (Fla.) continued to stretch its lead after carding a 12-over 296 on Friday to enter tomorrow's final round with a 35-stroke lead after totaling a 27-over 879 (298-285-296) for the tournament.

Luke played her best round of the National Championships on Friday after registering a birdie and collecting 11 pars. She made the turn at three-over 39 before shooting a birdie on the par-four 2nd to finish the back nine at two-over 37. For the tournament, Luke is tied for 28th overall at 22-over 235 (78-81-76) after moving up 10 places on the leaderboard in the third round.

Junior Jenna Rothermel (Danville, Pa./Danville) enters tomorrow's final round one stroke ahead of Luke and in a six-way tie for 22nd overall with a 21-over 234 (79-76-79). After shooting four birdies yesterday, Rothermel was unable erase her eight bogeys in the third round. She opened the day with three-consecutive bogeys before paring the next five holes and made the turn at four-over 40. On her back nine, Rothermel totaled four bogeys, including the par-four 5th, which she has bogeyed in each round of the tournament.

Freshman Maria Lopez (Bogota, Colombia/English School) posted her best round of the week, shooting an eight-over 79 (43-36) after double bogeying her first two holes. After shooting a seven-over 43 on the front nine, she managed a one-over 36 after the turn highlighted by birdie on the par-three, 158-yard 3rd. Lopez ranks tied for 48th on the leaderboard with a 30-over 243 (82-82-79).

After having her round disqualified yesterday to a scorecard issue, classmate Karina Palmberg (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Objetivo) carded a 15-over 86 (46-40) on Friday. She was at seven-over through her first four holes before finishing with a birdie on the par-four 14th. After making the turn at 10-over 46, Palmberg birdied the par-five, 522-yard 1st before shooting back-to-back bogeys.

Freshman Lorena Aranda (Trujillo, Peru/San Jose Obrero Marianistats) struggled with a 21-over 92 (48-44) after shooting five double bogeys in the third round. She managed back-to-back pars on the 15th and 16th before shooting a par on the 4th after making the turn. She enters the final day tied for 63rd on the leaderboard with a 46-over 259 (85-82-92).

The Vulcans conclude play in their first-ever NCAA Championships at the Longbow Golf Club tomorrow, Saturday, May 15, with tee times starting at 10:30 a.m. EST (7:30 a.m. PST).
