HUMMELSTOWN, Pa. (April 25) – The Vulcans built upon their first-round lead on Sunday to claim their second-straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship at the Hershey Links behind five top-10 finishes, included medalist
Jenna Rothermel (Danville, Pa./Danville).
The league championship was postponed to the spring due weather and course conditions during the fall season. This marked the second year that the women conducted a separate championship after prior to last season the men and women competed together in a single championship event.
Under the guidance of head coach
MerriLyn Gibbs, the California University of Pennsylvania women's golf team finished with a 19-over 595 (303-292). The Vulcans held a 23-stroke lead after the first round of the tournament before winning the seven-team tournament by 48 strokes. Kutztown finished as the event's runner-up for a consecutive year with a two-round total of 67-over 643 (326-317), while West Chester shot an 89-over 665 (330-335) to edge Gannon (90-over 666; 336-330) by one stroke for third place.
Rothermel (pictured right) shot a second round of four-under 68, the only subpar round of the tournament, to win the individual title by six strokes with a two-round score of one-under 143 (75-68). Last season, the junior was runner-up at the PSAC Championships behind former teammate and All-American
Simone DeSouza and also posted a top-10 effort as a freshman at the league event.
Freshman teammate
Maria Lopez (Bogota, Colombia/English School) finished second overall at five-over 149 (75-74), while sophomore
Dianne Luke (Mirisarawak, Malaysia/Saint Columba) tied for third at seven-over 151 (78-73) with East Stroudsburg's Karen Cash, who was the leader after the first round on Saturday.
Newcomer
Lorena Aranda (Trujillo, Peru/San Jose Obrero Marianistats) carded an eight-over 80 in the final round to finish at 11-over 155 (75-80) to finish fifth overall in a field of 37 golfers. Fellow freshman
Karina Palmberg (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Objetivo) was two strokes back at 13-over 157 (80-77) after shooting five-over 77 on Sunday.
All five of the Cal U golfers at the PSAC Championships earned all-conference honors after posting top-10 finishes at the event.
