INDIANAPOLIS (March 7) – The California University of Pennsylvania women’s basketball team was awarded an at-large bid to the 2010 NCAA Division II Tournament on Sunday night and will open play in the tournament against seventh-seeded Virginia State of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) on Friday, March 12. The Vulcans will serve as a host for the first two rounds with the Atlantic Regional Championship being played at the highest remaining seed on Monday, March 15.
The Vulcans and Trojans are schedule for a 6 p.m. tip at Hamer Hall on Friday with the winner advancing to meet the winner of West Liberty-Millersville on Saturday, March, 13, at 7 p.m. The winner of two games at Hamer Hall will advance to the regional final at the highest remaining seed.
Cal U has now made a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)-record nine-straight NCAA Tournament appearances and has an all-time record of 18-8 in the tournament following back-to-back appearances in the Elite Eight. The Vulcans are one of three PSAC teams in the tournament field, as they are joined by No. 1 seed Gannon and No. 6 Millersville.
The Golden Knights are the host for the other half of the Atlantic Regional bracket after earning the automatic-qualifier (AQ) from the PSAC. Gannon will open against WVIAC-champion Fairmont State with the winner advancing to meet the winner of CIAA-champion Fayetteville State-Seton Hill on Saturday.
The Atlantic Regional Champion will advance to the Elite Eight in St. Joseph, Mo., which was also the site of the Vulcans’ 2004 National Championship. For complete information about the Elite Eight, please click
