NEW LONDON, N.C. (Sept. 15) – After review of United States Golf Association (USGA) rule 33-2B1 that affected all teams at the Pfeiffer (N.C.) Invitational, the California University of Pennsylvania women’s golf team now finished third at the 14-team invitational with a 53-over 629 (324-305).

The second round was previously eliminated due to a rules infraction involved teams playing different tees on multiple holes at the par-72, 5,922-yard Old North State Club. However, since the three sets of tees that were moved after the final round had begun and since the final round scores didn't provide a distinct and significant advantage or disadvantage, the second sound scores are now counted.

With the score now reflecting both rounds, the Vulcans finished in third place and only seven strokes behind Carson-Newman (Tenn.) for the invitational title. The Eagles, who shot a 46-over 622 (315-307), won the event by three strokes over Catawba (N.C.) - 49-over 625 (310-315).

Freshman Maria Lopez (Bogota, Colombia/English School) finished second on the leaderboad in the 72-golfer field with a four-over 148 (76-72). She was only three strokes back of medalist Sarah Jane Sinard of Carson-Newman.

Sophomore Dianne Luke (Mirisarawak, Malaysia/Saint Columba) carded an eight-over 152 (78-74) to finish in a three-way tie for fourth place. In her college debut, freshman Inez del Rosario (Rizal, Philippines/La Salle College Antipolo) finished with a two-round total of 14-over 158 (80-78) and tied for 12th overall.

Freshman Kim Thomas (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) shot a 27-over 171 (90-81), while classmate Katharina Albert (Geiselwind, Germany/Steigerwald-Landschulheim) was two strokes back of Thomas at 29-over 173 (91-82).

Cal U resumes its fall season at the Bing-Beall Classic, hosted by Findlay (Ohio) beginning Monday, Sept. 28.
