CORAOPOLIS, Pa. (Oct. 13) – Behind top-five finishes by both freshmen
Maria Lopez (Bogota, Colombia/English School) and
Lorena Aranda (Trujillo, Peru/San Jose Obrero Marianistats), the California University of Pennsylvania women’s golf team claimed the invitational title at Holiday Inn Colonial Classic hosted by Robert Morris on Tuesday.
The Vulcans captured the team championship by 10 strokes after shooting an 88-over 664 (338-326). Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) finished in second place with a 98-over 674 (340-334), while host RMU placed third at 123-over 699 (342-357).
After shooting a seven-over 79 in the final round, Lopez finished the invitational in fourth place at 22-over 166 (87-79), while Aranda tied for fifth place after carding a 23-over 167 (80-87).
Junior
Jenna Rothermel (Danville, Pa./Danville) also added a top-10 finish by shooting a 24-over 168 (85-83) and freshman
Inez del Rosario (Rizal, Philippines/La Salle College Antipolo) shot a 25-over 169 (86-83) to finish ninth overall. Sophomore
Dianne Luke (Mirisarawak, Malaysia/Saint Columba) tied for 12th overall at the two-round event with a 27-over 171 (90-81).
Freshman
Kim Thomas (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) competed as an individual at the Colonial Classic and finished only one shot behind the medalist with a 16-over 160 (83-77). Her second-round total of five-over 77 was the lowest score by any golfer at the event.
IUPUI sophomore Kristi O’Brien claimed medalist honors by one stroke after finishing with a 15-over 159 (80-79).
The Vulcans conclude their fall season at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships, beginning on Saturday, Oct. 17. The two-day event will take place at the Hershey Links in Hummelstown, Pa. Last year, Cal U captured its first-ever conference title at the Hershey Links.
